What the earth and it's inhabitants have been going through though for years now is a cleansing process,where all the dirty laundry of society,both out there in the world and in our own personal "societies" has been rising to the top, to be revealed, processed and let go of.
I have personally worked with two Mayan wisdomkeeper elders in the past,learning their philosophy and the truth of the Mayan calendrical system.
They have let me know that there is not going to be the end of the world,but the end of a world,a way of being and an entrance into the gradual beginnings of a world cosciousness based on greater spirituality and brother/sisterhood of men and woman and their relationship to the planet.
If you talk to pretty much any one of the indigenous culures they are critical wary and fairly suspicious of new agers and anything of the "incense and pepermints" mentality,
because that culture tends to commercialise,and spectacularise their message and knowledge often using it for selfish purposes. The robbing of,and the cashing in of the ancient knowledge and customs of indigenous cultures such as the Maya is very common in this society.
In any case yes, 2012 is significant in the sense that it is only the very gradual and sometimes quiet murmurings of a new way of living together upon this planet.
