The centuries old magic of Jewish Artwork is well known and loved across the world. Jews are a rich community and Jewish art has a predominantly religious flavor combined in a variety of ways. As a result, special occasion gifts offered in Jewish weddings, the Bar Mitzvahs and other holidays almost always have a religious slant to them. Despite this, Jewish art is highly creative in its presentation and celebrates their culture. Jewish Wedding Gifts Lean Towards The Spiritual The unique workmanship of Jewish art distinguishes it from the other regular gifts one normally comes across. As far as weddings are concerned, the Jewish prefer to choose gifts associated with their wedding customs. In ancient times, many objects used in religious rituals were decorated to create Jewish artwork, in addition to items of jewelry, paintings, motifs and other Jewish traditions. These were passed on through generations. Much of the artwork was inspired by the Hebrew alphabet, which was considered sacred and divine and embedded in various works of art. Most Jewish wedding gifts are in the form of blessings, since Jews are highly religious people and the gifts reflect their faith. These gifts are usually treasured by the families throughout [...] Related posts:Thu, 16 Jun 2011 02:56:50 +0000
Erik Larson is not a novelist but his books on historical subjects are as beautifully written as if a novelist had written them. He has written about Chicago and the 1893 World’s Fair, a terrible hurricane in Galveston, Texas, and a doctor/murderer in London. In all his books, he juxtaposes two events or characters and flits between the two. In this book, “In the Garden of Beasts”, he presents the Dodd family of four in 1933 and the growing menace of Hitler and the Nazi party. It’s brilliant writing at its best. William Dodd was a professor at the University of Chicago and a product of a southern upbringing. He was mild-mannered and subtle, but fairly ambitious, career-wise. As a self-described “Jeffersonian Democrat”, Dodd had come to the attention of newly-inaugurated Franklin Roosevelt in 1933 when Roosevelt and his State Department were looking for a new US ambassador to Germany. Adolf Hitler had come to power in Germany at about the same time as Roosevelt in the United States. Both faced Depression-wracked countries and both set about helping to heal the economic woes. Hitler’s plans were much more ambitious at that point; getting out of the Versailles Treaty restrictions and [...] Related posts:Sun, 21 Nov 2010 05:15:09 +0000

Why Write a Book? You must have noticed that many public figures and enterprises use book publishing as a way to promote their business. It seems as if everybody from our current president to the latest business guru has done this. Beyond using a book as a tool to promote business, other people just want to express themselves. I have rarely met anybody, especially anybody who likes to read, who does not have a desire to write! Lucky for us, it is probably easier to get published now than it ever was in the past. For one thing, books can be published online. How does that help? Parents are not supposed to have favorites, but in our family of five children, Mom and Dad did. I don’t blame them because it wasn’t their fault. The Holocaust broke them. In Broken Birds, The Story of My Momila, I delve into my family, the Poltzer Family, and what happened to the generation after Mom and Dad’s….the second generation. Unaware of our chips and fractures, my four siblings and myself believed we ere a happy family. But the seeds of intense sibling rivalries planted when we were too young to remember were sprouting and flourishing just beneath the surface. We ended up lying, cheating, begrudging and emotionally harming each other, over and over again. When Mom unexpectedly died, the biased and problematic will she wrote caused all hell to break loose. It was a no holds-back slugfest. The battles raged in our attempt to resolve our new issues while the old scars were bubbling to the surface. When the battles were over, I was able to see my family clearly. In the end, the Holocaust not only broke Mom and Dad, but indirectly us too. The Simon Wiesenthal Center and the Washington [...] Related posts:Wed, 04 Feb 2009 18:59:30 +0000
Rhode Island’s homegrown Women’s Fiction writer, Eva Pasco, stirs a breeze with her debut novel, Underlying Notes, navigating the reader past Rhode Island’s affluent coastal communities, prominent landmarks, cherished institutions, and olive oil spills of the underworld. Carla Matteo copes with life by “taking to the bottle”–glass goddesses funneling perfume! During a mid-life renaissance the juice offers incentive for Carla to find her own niche, while the ominous rose note in Paloma Picasso forces her to confront a troubled past. Carla’s fragrance addiction numbs the pain of her father’s tragic death, wards off the sting of a severed adolescent friendship, fortifies her against the stench of employment inside her husband’s waste management company on land purported to have been swindled by her shady father-in-law, and wafts through fantasies of having a fling with hubby’s paesano. Carla Matteo’s self-deprecating wit and candor offer a narrative as multilayered as the fragrances she wears to permeate back stories that illuminate the present and surrender underlying secrets one morsel at a time.
